Description of VSU

Voronezh State University (VSU) is one of the largest and oldest scientific and educational centres of Russia. It was founded in 1918 and has recently celebrated its 95th anniversary.

About 21,000 students are taught by 1,700 academic staff.

VSU offers academic programmes at all levels including Bachelor, Master, Graduate and Post-graduate courses, Post-doctoral studies, as well as continued learning. In total, VSU offers 228 specialized study programmes, including 138 Master Degree programmes. Post-graduate vocational education is delivered by 114 vocational programmes. (See the VSU structure)

The VSU is the home to globally recognized academic and research centres in the fields of material engineering, nanotechnologies, biochemistry and molecular biology, geology, chemistry, radio electronics, and energy production. 4400 publications, written by VSU scholars, were listed by the ISI Web of Science database. The VSU’s Hirsch index is 30.

Research is carried out within 28 major thematic priorities in the fields of nanosystems, nanotechnologies and nanomaterials, as well as biomedical science; IT technologies and telecommunication; energy efficiency; radio-electronic technology for the aerospace industry; nuclear energy and technology; and social sciences.

Long-term scientific and educational international cooperation is based upon direct agreements with 120 universities and research institutes of various countries, including USA, Germany, UK, France, China, Spain, Ukraine, Estonia and many others. VSU actively cooperates with international organizations, funds and programmes, including UNESCO, the European Council, the Directorate General for Science of the European Commission, EU programmes (FP6/7, Erasmus Mundus, TEMPUS), the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the German Research Community (DFG) , IREX, and the International Science Foundation. VSU is involved in many international educational and scientific projects and programs. VSU has experience in preparation and implementation of double-degree programmes. Currently, the university is running 6 Master’s programmes in cooperation with universities in the United States, Germany, France, Spain and Italy in the fields of tourism, economics, international political studies, and linguistics.

VSU is the fourth largest university in Russia by the number of foreign students enrolled and the number of international contacts with leading university centres abroad. Foreign citizens have been studying at VSU for over 50 years. During that period approximately 15,000 foreign students, researchers and trainees from 126 countries have taken various study courses at the VSU. Currently, about 1,000 foreign nationals study here. The University pays attention to maintaining professional and scientific relations with its foreign graduates, many of whom became prominent scientists, businesspersons, educators, government officials, journalists, engineers, etc. For that purpose meetings with VSU’s foreign graduates are held both in Voronezh and abroad.
